UP WHERE WE BELONG

Buffy Sainte-Marie, Will Jennings, Jack Nitzsche

Written for the movie "An Officer and A Gentleman", this song won Academy Award Oscars for Jack Nitzche, Will Jennings and me. Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes turned it into a #1 Hit. This is the first time I've recorded it and it's a simpler, songwriter's version. Patrick Cockett plays guitar in a Hawaiian slack key tuning.

Who knows what tomorrow brings
in a world where few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real
I keep it alive

The road is long
There are mountains in the way
but we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
where the eagles cry
on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
far from the world we know
up where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to used to be
live their lives looking behind
When all we have is here and now
All our lives
out there to find

The road is long
There are mountains in the way
but we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
where the eagles cry
on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
far from the world we know
up where the clear winds blow

Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive... today

Love lift us up where we belong
where the eagles cry
on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
far from the world we know
up where the clear winds blow
